Navigating the Sharp Turns of Life

Psalm 121:1-8, “[A Song of degrees.] I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.(1) My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.(2) He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.(3) Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. (4) The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.(5) The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.(6) The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.(7) The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. (8 )

My husband has driven motorcycle for years. When he became a motors officer within his police department, he was trained on how to navigate around sharp turns. If you notice in the picture above, the officer’s head is pointed in the same direction he is turning. He was taught that the motorcycle will follow your line of sight.

What direction is your line of site pointed to? Who is it pointing toward? Every human being is moving in a particular direction. Some are headed toward failure while others are headed toward success. Either way, we are all moving ahead in a particular direction. Some roadways are bumpy with trials while others are smooth sailing.

We have all been through trials, haven’t we? How we deal with those trials all depends on how we prepare for them and how we handle ourselves during the trial. Shouldn’t we be preparing for our spiritual walk by looking to our Bibles? Shouldn’t we be fueling ourselves with the Word of God and putting on the full armor of God so we can be sheltered by the Lord during our trials? Why do we make it difficult on ourselves by not doing so? One thing is for certain, just as this police officer has learned that his motorcycle will go in the direction he is looking, we will go in the same direction as our spiritual mind will lead us.

I am particularly fond of Psalm 121. I have run to this Psalm many a times. My eyes have turned toward the direction I wish to follow. I have especially run to it as of late to find solace and my Lord’s love there because of a major trial I’m going through. This time, however, the Psalm meant more to me than it has ever meant. I noticed the different points the Psalmist had made:

1. I have to make a conscious effort to seek my help. God won’t force Himself upon me. But when I seek Him, He is there! My spiritual motorcycle is pointing toward Him, therefore my destination will be Him.

2. I have to recognize where my help comes from. I don’t rest in the counsel of my spouse or my friends, although it may be good counsel. I know that God is the One who will take care of my trial.

3. I realize that my Shepherd won’t allow me to falter. The more I am in the Scriptures, the more my faith is built. Verses come to mind as I need them for encouragement. Each step is guided by my Shepherd.

4. I realize that my Shepherd never sleeps! Praise the Lord! This verse alone brings me to tears. Nothing happens that He’s not aware of. Nothing! My Shepherd is ever watching over me!

5. I have come to know that my Shepherd will keep me safe.The Lord keeps me – watches over me – provides me with shade when fiery trials are present. That shade is found when I sit quietly reading my Bible and soaking in what He has for me.

6. I trust that my Saviour will keep me from the devil’s tactics and preserve my salvation. I know that everything that happens to me has been allowed in my life for my benefit so I can grow in my faith. There is great comfort knowing that my eternal security can never be removed because God is the One that preserves my soul, not me.

7. I know that my Shepherd will guide my path forever more. When I am in the Word, feeding my soul, my Shepherd can keep me from taking the wrong path in life. I cannot claim this if I am not in the Word. NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psa 119:105) and Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. (Psa 119:11)

I must point my eye toward the One who can help me. I seek for help and I know where that help comes from; I must recognize that this Help will keep me safe when I abide in Him; and lastly, my Help preserves my soul – which cannot be said of any other help this world has to offer. Why not go to the Expert? Thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness in my life. Teach me to point my eyes in the direction that will lead to answers.

Dear God…
I cherish my time in Your Word
That peace and comfort there lie
I keep my eyes fixed on those hills
Where my Helper comes from on High

Take God’s Word to Heart

BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. (Psa 119:9)

In all the messages you have heard preached, the one which is the most important is to obey God. God uses the Word as an instruction book for our lives. He also uses the Scriptures to bring conviction against sin. However, as I read and re-read this verse, it became apparent to me that the Lord used the words “young man (or woman)” here. Why would God use this adjective to describe the man? He could have just used the word man. So why did God interject with the word “young”?

I’ve seen older Christians who have remained “spiritual babes” because they have not spent time in the Word. Taking time in your Bible is work but a blessing follows. Some work for a living and at the end of the pay period, they receive a check. At the end of that hard work of reading and studying the Bible, they also receive a check – but a spiritual one. This check, however, lasts for eternity. Paul spoke on these spiritual babes.

1 Cor. 3:1-2, “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.”

Paul likened the spiritual babes as carnal. What did Paul mean by “carnal”? They were still more concerned about the things of the flesh than spiritual things. After all, isn’t that what a human baby does? He cries and cries until he is fed. A baby is only concerned about his own needs at this point. Not once does this baby consider that Mommy is really tired and could sleep an extra hour if he would just hold off! Paul used the right choice of words here, didn’t he?

The more we grow in the Lord and by His Word, the more we become spiritual adults. We no longer have the same struggles we did as younger believers. We’ve learned to trust more in the Lord; we’ve learned that we can never lose our salvation and we’re sure of it and can prove it from the Word; we’ve learned that God is faithful and won’t abandon us; we’ve received this peace that young Christians and spiritually immature Christians can’t understand.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Phi 4:7)

Suffice it to say that simply reading the Word is not enough. One has to heed its warnings, obey its warnings, as the Psalm continues to point out. What’s the use in reading a self-help book if you don’t apply what you’ve learned, right? Applying God’s Word to our lives is the key to maturing as a believer.

God stresses over and over that we need to be IN the Word and apply it to our lives! Without it, we not only don’t grow in the Lord, but we die spiritually. That baby would die without his Mommy feeding him, right? So will the babe in Christ stunt his growth in Christ by not opening his Bible and gleaning from its spiritual nourishment.

There’s a banquet table awaiting the believer who stops to eat!

Dear God…
May I come to you each day
With an open mind and heart
Let me search until I find
Your will, may I not depart

We All Need A Place to Hide

Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah. (Psa 32:7)

Everyone needs a special place where they can go “hide” from the world to be alone. Some prefer the outdoors; others prefer a cozy spot in their home. My father used to own a piece of land that was nestled in the woods in Northern Maine. On it was a ponded creek with a beaver’s dam, much like the picture above. He and I would sit for hours watching the beavers swimming to and from the dam doing their work. When their work was finished, Dad would go over the dam and remove one of the big branches. This would cause the current to flow through the dam and the beavers would sense it immediately. No more than just a minute or two later, you would see a head pop from near their lodge and off to work they would go to repair the damage. My father loved this hiding place and he would take me to it often. Out of all the memories I have of him, this one is the most special.

So many times I’ve wanted to run away to this place where I can hide from the day’s drama! Unfortunately, Dad sold the land to someone I don’t know – plus we live a thousand miles away. But the Lord showed me that I did not need a physical hiding place because I had my time with Him. That hiding place can be anywhere and any time. I don’t even have to waste gas getting there!

As long as I am in my hiding place with the Lord, He will give me peace from the cares of this world. The Lord will bring such peace that He will surround me with songs of deliverance and escape. Deliverance and escape from what, you may ask? Our cares, trials, tribulations, temptations, depression, anxiousness, sorrows, etc. God promises to give us song! It is not natural to sing when we are sad, is it? David says he was surrounded with songs of deliverance from God. Meditating in God’s Word surrounds us with the Lord’s goodness and mercy. All through Scriptures we are lifted up, comforted, given joy, given peace and comfort. How can we not have a song on our lips when we serve such a compassionate God!?

Where is your hiding place, my friend? Have you run to it today to discuss the cares of this world with your Shepherd? He awaits to guide you, comfort you and encourage you. All you have to do is show up.

So I retreat to that haven each morning
All my cares at His feet I do lay
I leave them with Him for He loves me
As I travel along life’s narrow way.

Jesus is a Refuge in These Times

I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. (Psa 91:2)

How I love the Book of Psalms! I have to admit that this book is one of my favorites because it has brought me much comfort during trial and tribulation. In these end times, believers need a refuge more than ever. We are on the brink of WWIII; wars and rumors of wars; horrible storms; more earthquakes than ever before; and volcanoes waking up! My daily morning reading through various news sources do not have any encouraging words but weigh heavily on the tumultuous times.

It’s as though God knew His children would need uplifting and encouragement when He penned the Book of Psalms through its writers. In reading this particular Psalm today, I noticed that David began with stating “I will say of the LORD.” I believe David didn’t keep this information to himself but was telling others what God was doing for him. He was bragging on his Lord. Do we brag on the Lord? Do we share the blessings God has bestowed upon us with those around us? Psalm 107:2 says “Let the redeemed of the LORD say so”! It’s one thing to share a blessing during testimony time in church, but it’s quite different to share what God has done for you with an unsaved person.

This is especially true when we are experiencing trials in our lives and the Lord has brought us through them. Sharing our experience with other believers serves to strengthen them in the Lord. Sharing our experience with the unsaved world shows them that we are sheltered and protected by our Heavenly Father, and He sees us through those difficult times. Speaking of God’s goodness is a testimony to others of His love and power.

David goes on to say that the Lord is his refuge and fortress. We all have a picture in our minds eye depicting what a refuge and fortress is. Oh my friend, doesn’t that just excite the spirit within you? Your Heavenly Father provides a refuge which shelters and protects you from danger, distress or calamity! Today’s picture gives us an idea of how that refuge looks like. God sees everything ahead of us and we can trust in Him to guide us through.

When I think of a refuge and fortress, I think of Christ’s teaching about building our house upon a rock. I believe David built his spiritual house upon this rock through his faith in God. His rock was God. There are countless Scriptures which show God as the rock. One that I love is, For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God? (2 Sam 22:32) David knew this rock intimately because he ran to this rock, his refuge and fortress, in time of need. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (Psa 61:2)

When I was first saved, I remember reading, And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. (1 Cor. 10:4) Christ is our Rock!! I noticed that the word rock was capitalized. So I did a word search in my e-Sword Bible software for the word “rock” to see if rock was capitalized anywhere else! At this point, I almost came unglued! Here are the verses for you! Be ready to be blessed as you see verses depicting our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ!

He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. (Deut. 32:4)

But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation. (Deut. 32:15)

Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee. (Deut. 32:18 )

How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up? (Deut. 32:30)

For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges. (Deut. 32:31)

The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. (2 Sam. 23:3) (Christ speaking to the Father!!)

And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. (1 Cor. 10:4)

A simple word search revealed that the word rock appears 119 times in 109 verses. Out of the 119 occurrences, it is capitalized seven times! Seven is God’s number for perfection! Christ is our perfect gift and the Jews’ spotless Lamb and sacrifice. Christ is the perfect sacrifice! Christ is revealed throughout the Word in total perfection! Rejoice, oh my soul! What lovely nuggets You have given to me this morning, Lord!! What better refuge and fortress can be provided than by the Rock of our salvation, the Lord, Jesus Christ!

Dear God…
I never cease to be amazed
At the truths Your Word provide
I run to my Rock and refuge
In Your fortress I do hide

Author and Finisher of Our Faith

Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Speaking as an author, I take this name for Jesus at heart. When I sit down to write, I begin my creation with that idea. As the thoughts flow through my mind, I write them down. I read and re-read them, tweaking those ideas, very much like a sculpture works with his clay. This same concept describes today’s name for the Lord. Jesus is the Author of our lives, my friend. He knew us before we were even born.

Jer 1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Author denotes the One who wrote or created the work, correct? Of course, Finisher denotes the One who ends/finishes something: like one who finishes a race. The Apostle Paul used the words “good fight” twice in the scriptures:

1 Tim 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

2 Tim 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

When one puts together these two titles for Jesus, we see that He is the One who “authored” the path of our salvation. He has given us every opportunity to see there is a God and that God’s desire for us is to be saved.

In the Old Testament, Israel had to offer sacrifices for their sins. These offerings would never wash away their sins. The Author of salvation knew that He would have to come to earth to form a new testament: a testament that would be complete. The price for sin would be paid in full, amen?

Heb 10:9-12 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. (10) By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (11) And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: (12) But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

The Author of our faith is also the Finisher in verse 12. Christ’s sacrifice for sins is FOR EVER. That is why Jesus said these final words:

Joh 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

No more did man have to offer a sacrifice to cover their sins. Jesus’s work as the sacrificial Lamb of God finished that work. He finished the work He began when He came to earth. As well, He will finish the work in your life! When we are born again, the Author of our faith began a work within each one of us. As we grow in Him, He writes His story in and through our lives. Once we are united with Him, whether by death or the Rapture, our earthly faith story is finished.

It doesn’t end there. This same Author and Finisher of our faith will have a sequel! We will join Him in Heaven, forever and eternally! You can’t get more complete than that! \o/ Thank You, Jesus!

The Bread of Life

Despite the weather outside, or the world falling apart, our hearts should be lit up with God’s word. We can see Jesus in many things surrounding us – right down to the bread we eat.

Joh 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Jesus said that He is the bread of life and that whoever comes to Him shall never hunger. The earthly minded man will read this verse and will automatically think of earthly bread. But that is not what Jesus is going for in today’s name. He is teaching His disciples about salvation, about everlasting life, about a bread that will never die. Jesus said that those that come to Him will NEVER hunger and NEVER thirst. He also said on the Sermon on the Mount:

Mat 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

When we hunger for God’s word and thirst after it, we shall be filled. God’s word provides salvation. God’s word provides instruction. God’s word feeds the soul. God’s word comforts in time of need. In every situation in life, the Scriptures provide what we need. This Bread of Life not only saves but provides spiritual nourishment.

The unbeliever could care less about spiritual food because his heart has spiritual blinders. There is nothing about the Bible that is attractive to him. The unbeliever doesn’t see his sin, and if he does see it, he doesn’t care.

There is none righteous in and of himself (Romans 3:10).

Only Christ is righteous. That is why He was the only One qualified to become the sacrificial Lamb so our sins would be forgiven… not just covered, but actually forgiven! Praise God! Let the Bread of Life speak to your heart and let Him feed you on your pilgrim walk in this evil world.

The Bridegroom

Don’t you just love today’s name for Jesus? He is our Bridegroom! His church, made up of born-again believers, is His bride. If you are married, do you recall just how excited you were to get married? In Jewish tradition, when a couple was betrothed, the groom would leave for a year to build a home for his bride. He would then come get his bride, they would wed, then there would be a great celebration.

Joh 14:1-4 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. (2) In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (4) And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

We are waiting for Jesus, our Bridegroom, to return for us. Are we as excited for His return as we were for our own wedding? Let’s make ourselves ready and be excited! His return is so close, friend!

1Co 15:51-52 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, (52) In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

1Th 4:13-18 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. (14) For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. (15) For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. (16) For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: (17) Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (18) Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Tit 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

Jesus taught on the ten virgins which is a beautiful picture of the Bride waiting for her Groom.

Mat 25:1-13 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. (2) And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. (3) They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: (4) But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. (5) While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. (6) And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. (7) Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. ( 8 ) And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. (9) But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. (10) And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. (11) Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. (12) But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. (13) Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

The Church eagerly awaits her Bridegroom as we look for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ!

The Bright and Morning Star

Today’s name for Jesus reveals to us the wonderful Light of the world – the One who was sent to bring salvation to mankind. (Revelation 22:16) Our King was called a star in Numbers 24:17 and Luke 1:78. He was also called this in 2 Peter 1:19 and a morning star in Revelation 2:28.

Num 24:17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.

Luk 1:78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

2 Pe 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

Rev 2:28 And I will give him the morning star.

Joh 1:9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

Joh 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Jesus Christ is the Light of the world according to John 1:9 and John 8:12. Suffice it to say, He brings light into our dark, sinful hearts and opens our blind eyes to the beautiful light of the Gospel! Praise the Lord!

The Brightness of His Glory

Heb 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

The brightness of His glory is an unusual name and one I had not thought about when reading Hebrews 1:3. I’ve never heard a message on this either. But I do know this: Christ in all His glory will be revealed at the Second Coming and every eye shall see Him and every knee shall bow to Him. There will be no mistake who He is and no one will mistaken Him for one of their own gods.

Isa 45:23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

Rom 14:11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

Php 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

The scripture, 2 Cor. 4:4, teaches us that the light of the gospel is what draws man to Him, amen?

2 Co 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Satan’s main goal is to put as much distraction in our path so that we do not wish to see that blessed light. The world has managed to distract man. But Christ will win in the end – EVERY person will see the King of Kings and EVERY knee shall bow to Him.

Jesus also displayed this brightness to Peter, James and John on the Mount of Transfiguration in Matthew 17. Notice that everything about Jesus here reflects “light and brightness,” amen? Our King’s face was shining as the sun and His clothing was so bright, it would make any wife’s efforts of brightening her laundry jealous. Can you imagine His return to earth? This is what mankind will see. Praise Him!

Mat 17:2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

Captain of Their Salvation

During these end times, I’m keeping in mind that my heart needs to stay on fire for Christ, the Captain of MY salvation! Praise the Lord for today’s name for Jesus! Is He the Captain of your salvation? One can be saved and not have Him as their Captain. Who rules over you – Your flesh or Jesus? I speak to myself here as well. So many times I have moved forward with something without seeking the Captain’s thoughts. We can find His thoughts in the scriptures, amen?

Heb 2:10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

A captain commands a company of soldiers. These soldiers do not do anything of their own free will but obey the commands of their captain. If they don’t, they are court martialed. There are consequences for them if they don’t obey. Do we obey Christ’s commands set forth in the bible? Or do we live our lives the way we want to? Speaking from experience, my own free will always lead me astray. But doing the Father’s will always brings peace. It draws me closer to Him!

So who is your captain? Submit yourselves to the One and Only Captain! This is how we fight sin in our lives.
