Day 25 – Why Don’t People Believe the Bible?
I became a born-again Christian at the age of 25 – nearly 32 years ago. I totally understand today’s text because it speaks of me personally. If I compare myself to God and His holiness and righteousness, I definitely am wicked. God is our plumb line – HE is the definition of holiness and we are the definition of sinful – God is THE measuring stick to which we should compare ourselves. I am not a scholar but I do understand God’s word.
Think about it for a moment, if every person on earth was sinless, there would be no death, no crime, no need for prisons, etc. The earth would be a perfect place. However, God’s word says that men’s hearts are deceitful above all things and desperately wicked! Furthermore, sin darkens the heart – blinds it from that which is holy and righteous.
People don’t believe the Bible because they are blinded. I remember before I was saved, I would open the Bible and it was all mumbo jumbo to me. However, after salvation, it was as though a veil had been removed from my eyes and I was able to understand what I was reading. The unsaved have “spiritual cataracts” covering their eyes of understanding.
The god of this world is none other than the devil, Satan. He convinces people that they are on the right track so they do not pursue after Christ and spiritual matters. He puts just enough “spirituality” in what they hear at church or he keeps people thinking they are O.K. just the way they are. He won’t reveal his true nature because people might recognize what he was trying to do.
Satan blinds their minds. Those who are not saved are under his power. However, once we are born again, we are no longer – we are free and are no longer blind.
Those who do not believe the Bible are growing in numbers because of the times that we are in. The devil knows his time is short and is doing all he can to discredit the Bible. There are over 200 versions of the Bible out there – all since 1900. If the devil can succeed in causing people to believe that God’s word is not really with us today, then people won’t have the faith needed to believe what is written in their version!
These last-days-scoffers are willingly ignorant. Their sinfulness prevails in their lives and, therefore, they do not wish to follow after righteousness. Instead, they soothe their consciences by following what the world says about the Bible, rather than studying it out for themselves. As long as sin rules in their lives, they will not believe the Bible.
